Recovering Unsaved Microsoft Office Documents

In TrialWorks Tips by trialworks

With our new Log Off Policy in full effect, as Hosted Customers, you may experience losing a previously unsaved Microsoft Office, Excel, Word or PowerPoint document after being automatically logged off.

Here are the steps to recover your unsaved document in Microsoft Office 2010 if you inadvertently lose the document due to it not being saved:

1. Open the Microsoft Office 2010 application that you were using.

2. Click the File tab.

3. Click Recent.

4. Click ‘Recover Unsaved Documents’ if you are in Word, ‘Recover Unsaved Workbooks’ if you are in Excel or ‘Recover Unsaved Presentations’ if you are in PowerPoint 2010.

5. Your saved drafts folder will open in a new window.

6. Select the file and then click Open.

7. In the business bar at the top of the file, click ‘Save As’ to save your file to your computer and not lose that document.

Microsoft Office 2013 will temporarily save a copy of your unsaved work and by default, search for AutoRecover files each time the application starts.

1. Restart the Microsoft Office 2013 application that you were using.

2. Search for missing files displayed in the Document Recovery task pane along the left hand side of the screen.

3. Double click the AutoRecover files until you locate the document.

4. Save it immediately to ensure not loosing that document.

Please note, opening documents from hyperlinks either within TrialWorks or not, will remove the recovery function making that document unrecoverable. Please be sure to always save your work to avoid data loss. The autosave feature in Microsoft Office is enabled and set for one minute. However, this should not be used as an alternative to saving your work manually

Remember, we’ve placed a ‘Log Off’ icon on your desktop to help avoid this issue. When you are stepping away from your desk for an extended period of time, save your work, close all programs and click the ‘Log Off’ button located on your desktop.
